I’m managing a local law centre with a Board of 12, 24 staff, 40 volunteers, ten funders and an annual turnover of more than 1 million pounds. We provide free legal advice, support and assistance to disadvantaged citizens of the London Borough of Lambeth in the areas of housing law, immigration rights, debt, employment law, welfare rights and public interest strategic litigation.

September 2013 - June 2018

Manager Community Legal Services Program, Victoria Legal Aid, Melbourne

This role built on my previous role as Program Development Officer (see below). I managed the Community Legal Services Program and its team. Key to this was practical planning for this $27 million pa funding program. I also contributed to strategic planning for Victoria’s Community Legal Centres sector and VLA.

This role involved supporting 52 Community Legal Centres to develop their capacity for improved strategic planning, community engagement and reporting. My approach to this role was to treat each of the 52 CLCs as individual clients, with individual needs and issues. I also worked on sector-wide projects and issues, in collaboration with a range of stakeholders with interests in CLCs.

In this role, I managed staff, volunteers, strategic relationships (especially with funders), the organisation’s finances and administrative functions and the development of projects, including through securing funding for major projects.

Operations Manager (Locality) Glasgow Community & Safety Services, Glasgow, Scotland, UK

I managed staff and resources to address anti-social behavior in one area of the city (the South East), and strategic operational relationships and partnership plans for co-ordinated delivery of services by a range of partner agencies (government, community-based and volunteer-based) to respond to community concerns over anti-social behavior.

This 12 month project focused on organisational cultural change within the Council. It involved community liaison, development of community projects, development and delivery of training for Council staff in community engagement.

Manager Glasgow's Mediation Service, Glasgow

I was employed by Glasgow City Council to establish the city's first community mediation service. Managing a staff of 6 and a volunteer pool of 40 mediators, I developed mediation services for neighbours in dispute within a catchment of 1 million people, in a city with a notoriously violent reputation and multiple layers of deprivation and social problems.

As the inaugural EO of the South West LLEN - an organisation that aims to develop enhanced education and employment pathways and options for young people - I was responsible for developing the organisation’s practices, policies, administrative systems and strategic direction. I managed and served a membership of 70, a Committee of 19 and a staff of 3.

The Dairy RAP program focussed on communities affected by de-regulation of the dairy industry. My role was to work with applicant groups and businesses, assisting them to develop their proposals for funding.

My contribution to this project involved designing a community consultation framework, client focused consultation processes (for specific target groups of injecting drug users, their families and prisoners), community awareness programs and evaluation methods and materials regarding the issue of the use and impact of injecting drugs & non-prescribed drugs within the community.
